Thanksgorging

What a fat kid weekend. Double thanksgiving, multiple leftover turkey sandwiches, apple crisp, pumpkin pie, chocolate mousse, sushi, pumpkin bread, crepes, egg nog . . . no wonder indoor soccer felt like hell on Sunday. Hope you all enjoyed the gorgefest as much as I did. My next East Coast stint will be Dec 30 to Jan 4. New Years brunch anyone?

FKA reunion!!

What a weekend! Nothing like rugby to bring fat kids together in the Captains new locale. There was sightings of all the founders albeit too short (WTF sloth, next time stay an extra day for feedings). Since there were complaints of my lovely FKA logo, I've gone ahead and replaced with the preferred T-shirt art, hope you enjoy the kit! I've gotten a ton of requests for shirts from outsiders and I'm on the fence about just handing out membership. Still, maybe I can turn this into a way to fund more fka adventures. Ever the entrepreneur. . . ok stop laughing. Waiting on good pics from everyone to put up, send em over or post. Next sighting Sun post turkey week, if you're around lets have a gathering.

Great to see all my homies!!

Snickers from Heaven

Quick trip to Boston/Adams, MA yielded lots of good FKA material, including this quality pic of me stuffing my face full of Tartine goodness. Food was awesome all weekend with cameos from a contemporary bistro, surprisingly good Indian, tasty organic B&B full breakfast, and obligatory Hot Cider. However, the winning FKA moment of the weekend occurred at the summit of DQ and I's hike up Mt. Greylock.

Around the side of this monument and after unsuccessfully trying to get the auto timer on the camera to work, I looked down and amazingly saw an unopened Snickers bar lying on the ground. Before I could think I busted out saying "God loves us!!" tore it open and chomped half of it. Sigh, the impending embarrassment was almost too much, but when there's spontaneous chocolate on the ground after 2.5 hours of hiking, I call that a miracle. At least I had the sense to only eat half and share. Poll then . . . how would you have reacted?

Fat Kidds at Walden Pond

Steaming Asian Buns checking in. This post should have been written weeks ago, but I am not the best with punctuality. Diary Queen and I had a lovely FKA adventure at Walden Pond (Concord, MA) one lazy overcast afternoon. Summer was in full swing, and we felt the need to escape the urban life.

Walden Pond's is a great place to train for sprint triathlon's especially one's involving open water swimming. On that day, it was home to couples, families, old folks, high schoolers who can drive, and shrieking children splashing each other. Dairy Queen and I went with the intention of finding a grassy meadow to do some bear crawl sprint workouts. After hiking under the trees in a light mist of rain, the only thing we really found was a bog. Not ideal for 25 meter bear crawls. We ended up just hopping in the water for a decent workout. After an hour of swimming, water treading and floating, we head into Concord to find a park to actually do those damned bear crawl sprints at Dairy Queen's insistence. In case you didn't know, bear crawls work all your major muscle groups including your tear ducts.

After the first set, we were covered in fresh grass clippings from rolling all over the ground. I'm sure cars driving by had some interesting thoughts. After we were done, we brushed ourselves off, patted each other on the back, then immediately headed to the closest and best pizzeria in the MetroWest area to stuff our starving faces: Sorrento's Brick Oven Pizzeria. Can't remember what we ordered but it was large and had sufficiently plenty of meat with few veggies on top of a thin crust dough. Just the way I love my pizza. It was amazingly delicious. I don't think either of us actually stopped for a moment to have a conversation once we had it in front of us. I may have forgotten to breath. The employees seemed pleased how much we were enjoying ourselves.

July Rants and Raves

The captain has now been habitating San Fran for a month plus a few days so time for an update. As I am still unemployed I've taken to some adventures in cooking, some with good results, others not so good. On the high points, I made this Red Velvet cake and man the cream cheese frosting was to die for, cake was just a vessel. On the low points, I have taken seriously the embodiment of "garbage disposal" and have lowered my standards of what is considered eatable, and hence eaten my share of slightly moldy/bruised food over the past month. Don't think I'll be needing that flu shot this year.

Significant events of the month include the following 1) nailing down my favorite coffee shop to "Thinkers" of the 3 in my area. Short walk and massive breakfast sandwiches won out over good people watching and "better coffee". Ps. SF is really serious about their coffee. 2) The pro/con of my first trip for Mexican: amazing huge burritos with fresh ingredients wherever you go, it's true I haven't had anything comparable/they're expensive in the $8-9 range. They rationalize this because they're big enough for 2 meals . . . unless you're a fat kidd. 3) Did my first real bike ride over the GG bridge and into Marin Headlands Park. Absolutely stunning and sometimes scary views as you come screaming over the summit and have a view of the entire Pacific below.

Spotlight restaurant of the month is "Walzwerk" in the Mission where I enjoyed massive jager schniztel, beer, and blueberry cobbler, ate it all and then after an hour of walking still had to lie down from the pain of being full. It was soo worth it.

Fat Kids at the Movies

You know you're a fat kid when you go to a film screening and bring a loaf of bread to munch on! Imagine our surprise when we discovered we had both brought a loaf as a tasty snack. Amazing!

Dairy Queen enjoyed four-cheese bread and Veginazi downed some wonderful sourdough. Yum!

The Captain Goes West . . .

Alas, one fat kidd had to depart from the others to drive cross-country. Veginazi agreed to come along even though she was doing another cross-country trip later this summer (going vegan makes you crazy). Upon hearing of the fun to be had, Dairy Queen invited herself along and then there was the traveling trio.

Faced with the boredom of I-80, the traveling trio decided to invite the public to call-in to the Garmin hotline for romantic advice, boredom alleviation, and general banter. Faithful fat kidd's Awkward Cheese and Steaming Asian Buns called in for daily updates, doled out philosophical questions to keep the minds occupied, and provided distraction as we worked our way through the hundreds in exit numbers.

Aside from Sloth providing us with amazing Apple Dip there was little food that was enticing enough to eat for 5 meals a day. Dairy Queen was continuously thwarted by the lack of Dairy Queen's coinciding with rest stops, and was not pleased with the Captain's orders of No stop until running on gas fumes. In short by the time we reached our destination a true fat kidd outing was in dire necessity.

Delivering on queue was Dairy Queen with a birthday. What an excuse to gorge oneself without even having to exercise aka Sloth's MO. There was breakfast, amazing Tartine (www.tartinebakery.com) treats including heaven status bread pudding, hot dogs at the giants game with beer, and yummy seafood goodness at Pacific Catch (www.pacificcatch.com). Extended birthday feasts also included sushi, korean bbq, and heaven status ice cream from Bi-Rite (biritecreamery.com).

All in all San Francisco is shaping up to be a true fat kidd's paradise.
